Classification

IDAF has adopted new classification systems for use at the 2013 World Dwarf Games.

  • A lower body classification system based upon leg length (difference between sitting and standing heights) will be used for open and masters division athletes in badminton (singles only), table tennis, and track (but not relays).
  • An upper body classification system based upon arm span will be used for open and masters division athletes in boccia (singles only), field, and swimming (but not relays).
  • A junior division classification system based upon dwarfism diagnosis will be used in junior division badminton (singles only), boccia (singles only), field, swimming (but not relays), table tennis, and track (but not relays).
  • Junior division athletes retain their junior division classifications if they choose to compete in open division events.

Athletes may be moved down a class if they have additional mobility impairments. The results of functional tests will be used to make these decisions.

  • A lower body classification may be lowered if the athlete needs balance assistance to step up and down twice on a 6-inch step.
  • An upper body classification may be lowered if the athlete cannot execute a chest pass and an overhead pass of a mini-basketball from a 3-foot distance.
